Learn to Skate

  • CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Sport Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles,

CanSkate centers on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity.

  • For beginners aged 4 and older, whether children or adults, as well as those looking to refine their fundamental skills, our programs offer tailored instruction to suit a variety of goals. Whether your focus is on figure skating, hockey, speed skating, or simply skating for enjoyment, our experienced coaches are here to guide you in enhancing your abilities and building confidence on the ice.

  • It all starts with an idea. Perhaps you envision developing your skills or pursuing a passion for skating. Our journey begins with coaches certified by the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), who are expertly trained in teaching the mechanics and proper techniques of skating. These knowledgeable coaches are supported by skilled Program Assistants, ensuring that every skater receives comprehensive guidance and support on the ice.

  • A complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.

  • All you need are skates, a CSA-approved hockey helmet, long pants, mittens, warm sweater or jacket. Dress in layers – it will get warm!

Adult & Tot Skate

This program is designed for younger skaters who are either new to skating or not yet confident on the ice. It allows them to have the support of a familiar adult with them on the ice, providing 1-on-1 assistance as they work through pre-CanSkate skills to prepare for CanSkate.

Please note, this is not an "Adult and Tot Learn to Skate Together" program. The accompanying adult must have prior skating experience.

Star Skate

Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition – this is what STARSkate is all about!

Disciplines- Figure skating has four disciplines that lead to a high-performance pathway.

Synchronized: Synchronized skating, or “synchro” is a specialized discipline of skating involving groups of eight or more skaters performing various group formations and maneuvers. The objective is for the team to perform as one unit executing circles, blocks, lines, wheels and intersections in unison to the music, while demonstrating quality edges, power and flow. Synchronized Skating categories accommodate skaters at any age and skill level.

Singles: Single skating is a term used to describe the discipline of freeskate. Generally, this is the most recognized form of figure skating.

Pairs: Pair skating involves two individuals skating as a unit performing freeskating moves. Pairskating also includes lifts, death spirals and throws.

Ice Dance: Inspired by ballroom dancing, this discipline incorporates musicality, performances and athletisim to all your favourite rhythms.

  • The Arborg Skating Club’s Intro to STARSkate program offers skaters the opportunity to take their skills to the next level. Designed for those who have progressed beyond CanSkate, this program introduces skaters to figure skating, focusing on developing elements such as jumps, spins, and footwork. With personalized coaching and a supportive environment, skaters can continue to improve at their own pace while preparing for more advanced levels of skating. Whether your goal is to compete or simply enjoy the art of figure skating, Intro to STARSkate provides the foundation for lifelong skating success.

  • STAR 1-5 is an “introduction” to figure skating. Skaters entering the program should be able to perform all skills in the CanSkate Stages 5 & 6.  The sport of figure skating has a strong technical focus.

It takes time for skaters to develop the skills necessary to be proficient at certain techniques. The STAR 1-5 program is designed to allow skaters to be recognized for achievement at the various stages. Skaters will train in Skills, Dance, and Freeskate and Artistic disciplines. Skaters will also have the opportunity to take tests and attend competitions (with an assessed to standard focus).

  • STAR 6- Gold is an assessment and event structure for skaters who completed the STAR 1-5 Program. This structure builds on the skills acquired in STAR 1-5 and introduces skaters to more advanced figure skating elements.

Pre-Power Skate

Pre-POWERskate is an introductory level of the CanPOWERskate program for young ringette or hockey players aged 5 to 9. Participants should be able to skate forward, stop on command, and skate backward. While they may not yet have the power and agility for the full CanPowerSkate program, this stage prepares them for it.

CanPowerSkate, Canada’s only nationally recognized power skating program, teaches essential skills through expert-designed lessons. Our Pre-POWERskate program focuses on basic skating skills in a power skating environment, with group lessons led by a Certified Skate Canada Professional coach.

Pre-POWERskate runs alongside CanSkate sessions. Children who do not meet the Pre-POWERskate requirements will be transitioned into the CanSkate program.
